Expanding to other platforms

Posted in General at 3:54 pm by Shimon Shnitzer

I keep receiving emails from customers who replaced their Palm OS phones to newer phones running a different OS (WM5, Blackberry…) about versions of my products for those OS. They all say they find it real hard to live without TAKEphONE, 2day, 4cast, 2dial, etc.

Well - I thought “why not - let’s try WM5 - it’s wide spread, and I might get considerable sales there”. So I bought devices, installed tools, and started porting my apps.

But then I bumped into a surprize. Now - I have to admit, I am a Palm OS fanatic - I LOVE the OS, the easy user interface, the snappy operation. It was real hard for me to get used to WM5. And - eventually - I noticed this porting effort slowed down to a halt.

I tried to figure out why, and came to a simple conclusion - I believe the best value in my applications is the fast response - they’re all about allowing users to achieve things FAST & SIMPLE. And on the WM5 devices I used (Treo, HP) - everything run so SLOW… It seemed to me there is no point in building a “do it fast…” application, if it will always run slow cause of the underlying device/OS.

So - WM5 is on hold right now…  Hey - there’s the “new kid/star on the block” - the iPhone !

But - Apple decided not to let us developers build apps for it. Of course - some guys broke that and were able to build and deploy apps, but then Apple wiped that out with a f/w update. Of course - the new f/w will be ‘hacked’ again, but this cycle of life will not generate an “iPhone economy” - low chance of making an application that will sell well.

So now I am debating between two other platforms - the Blackberry OS, and Symbian. Still gathering information… what do you think ?
